Ballet

Ballet is a traditional art form, which was developed over 500 years ago. Classical dance is designed to appear graceful, elegant and effortless, but in reality ballet requires a great deal of strength, balance, coordination and technical skill.

We follow the ABD ballet syllabus, and currently offer classes between the levels of Pre-Preparatory (baby class) and Grade 3, with opportunities to study a higher level. Ballet exams are available annually, and there is the additional opportunity to perform classical dances in Festivals and in the yearly En Pointe Showcase.

Tap

Tap dance originated in the United States in the 1800s. It has a strong focus on rhythm, musicality and improvisation, with many sub-genres existing within the style as a whole (e.g. jazz/rhythm tap and Broadway tap, popularised by artists such as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire).

We follow the ABD tap syllabus, and currently offer classes between the levels of Pre-Preparatory (baby class) and Grade 2, with opportunities to study a higher level. Tap exams are available annually, and there is the additional opportunity to perform tap dances in Festivals and in the yearly En Pointe Showcase.

Modern/Jazz

Modern and jazz are social forms of dancing which emerged around the early 20th Century, largely as a rebellion against the rigidity and formality of classical dance styles. They are expressive, individual and extremely broad in definition, often fusing together different elements of many dance genres.

We follow the ABD modern/jazz syllabus, where we currently have a Grade 1&2 class, with opportunities to study a higher level, as well as introductory classes for younger pupils. Aside from the set syllabus, we also focus on teaching technique and musicality within our modern/jazz classes, often learning 'free' dance routines and focusing on increasing our dancers' skill sets. Modern/jazz exams are available annually, and there is the additional opportunity to perform modern/jazz dances in Festivals and in the yearly En Pointe Showcase.

Contemporary & Lyrical

Contemporary and lyrical dance require strong technique, but also a great deal of creativity, individual interpretation and expression. Both styles use many of the technical elements of ballet and modern dance, but are performed in a more emotive and expressive fashion, often to tell a story or convey a certain message.

We follow the ABD contemporary syllabus, and currently offer a Grade 1 class, with opportunities to study a higher level. We also offer various non-syllabus classes for all ages (junior, intermediate and senior), where we work on improving children's technique, teaching new skills, and practising emotional expression through dance. Contemporary exams are available annually, and there is the additional opportunity to perform contemporary/lyrical pieces in Festivals and in the yearly En Pointe Showcase.

Street & Commercial

Street dance is the umbrella term for a lot of social dance styles which evolved naturally through the cultural and lived experiences of certain groups of people. The social nature of street dance is self-explanatory - it's danced together with your friends, making it a fun, high-energy freestyle genre, great for developing coordination and confidence. Commercial dance is closely linked with street dance, but is focused on entertaining and appealing to a wide audience, instead of a small circle. It's the style most often seen in pop concerts and music videos, and is great for improving a child's performance skills and confidence in dancing in-front of an audience.

Musical Theatre

Our Musical Theatre classes focus on all three skills equally, giving your child a well-rounded experience of performing on stage. We regularly learn songs and dances from different Musicals, and rehearse short acting pieces from scripts, performed to the rest of the class. Our Musical Theatre classes are friendly and relaxed, and are designed to take any fear or intimidation out of the art of performance. They are perfect for building a child's confidence and love of performing on-stage. Every child has the opportunity to perform their Musical Theatre pieces at Festivals or in the yearly En Pointe showcase.

Pre-Pointe/Pointe

Pointe is established within the classical ballet style and involves the dancer supporting all of their bodyweight on the tips of fully extended feet. In order to go onto pointe, a specific level of technique and strength of the legs, feet, ankle and core is required. Dancers are not offered the opportunity to go onto pointe before the age of twelve to ensure that the bones of the feet are adequately developed for pointe work. In our pre-pointe classes, we focus on preparing students to move onto pointe work through technique and strengthening exercises carried out on demi-pointe. In these classes, students carry out exercises both on the barre and in the centre.

Festival

Our Festival classes refer to the slots where we are able to choreograph and teach routines to perform in local dance competitions and festivals. Individual Festival slots are where children can be taught solos, duets, trios, and other small group pieces in their preferred style, whereas the timetabled Festival classes are focused on group routines. Festivals incorporate all the styles taught at En Pointe, and allow children to showcase the skills they've learned in their technical syllabus classes in fun dance routines. Currently, we have a junior  and inter group festival team, and individual festival slots available for all ages.

Acro

Acro combines classical dance technique with acrobatic elements and gymnastics style choreography. At En Pointe, we teach acro using the ABD syllabus, and it is therefore possible to take examinations in this dance form.
